Despite the merits of Polman's prior work, recently I find myself increasingly questioning her motives, and wondering about the purpose of her criticism.
Polman's recent article was published in the well-read Saturday edition of the NRC, in a 2-page spread. Unfortunately, the NRC did not find it necessary to allocate any space to the (undoubtedly plentiful) responses to the article. This is a real shame, because her argument was shaky, the article was poorly written, and lacked reflection on the organizational and contextual realities in which NGOs operate. Overall, the article does more damage than good to any development efforts in Haiti.
The original article can be found here (login required), and below is the response I submitted to this article. Both are in Dutch.
